Pain in the Achilles tendon is usually termed Achilles tendinopathy. The Achilles tendon is the structure that connects the calf muscle to the foot (at the back of the heel bone) and can be a source of pain both lower down where it attaches to the heel bone (known as insertional Achilles tendinopathy) or higher up in the tendon (known as non-insertional or mid portion Achilles tendinopathy). This condition can result in visible swelling or thickening around the tendon that is often tender to press or squeeze.
